Amazon Draws a Line on Third-Party AI Shoppers

Meta's Muse, introduced earlier this month, is designed to help people carry out common online tasks such as shopping and booking appointments. The agent quickly ran into a wall. Amazon prohibits other companies from deploying automated tools to shop its site and started blocking Muse on Sunday night. Amazon cut off Muse after unsuccessfully asking @Meta to voluntarily exclude its store from the experience, with the company stating it never agreed to any of it.

Amazon's objections start with disclosure: Meta never said Muse would shop the store, and Amazon says the agent does not identify itself when it browses. Meta's launch post says Muse has no visibility into passwords or payment methods, and that logins go into secure storage the agent can use without seeing them. The standoff is especially notable because the two companies already work together: Amazon products have been purchasable inside Facebook and Instagram since 2023, and Meta signed a multibillion-dollar deal in April to run agentic AI workloads on Amazon's Graviton chips.

@elonmusk questioned whether those restrictions will remain enforceable as agents become tied to users' browsing sessions, writing that "Amazon won't be able to tell whether the buyer is a human or an AI acting on their behalf if access is via the user's IP address and cookies."

AgentKit answers that at the verification checkpoint, letting sites confirm an agent is acting on behalf of a verified human while the user keeps identity-based controls.

The Amazon-Meta clash highlights growing tensions as AI agents increasingly move beyond answering questions and begin handling tasks such as product discovery and purchases.
