Backpack Expands Derivatives Lineup with GRAM Perps

@Backpack has added $GRAM perpetual futures to its derivatives platform, giving both institutional and retail traders a way to take leveraged positions on the native currency of The Open Network (@Ton_blockchain). The contract trades around the clock, with continuous settlement available directly on the exchange.

The listing broadens Backpack's already wide derivatives catalogue. According to the exchange's own documentation, Backpack currently offers more than 50 perpetual futures markets with up to 50x leverage and settles funding every hour rather than the eight-hour cycle used by most competing venues, giving traders 24 funding intervals per day.

What Is GRAM and Why Does It Matter?

$GRAM is the rebranded name for what was previously known as Toncoin. A community governance vote concluded on June 8, 2026, with 81.22% of participating voting power approving the rename, and the change took effect on June 15. The rebrand was purely cosmetic: no token swap, migration, or new issuance was required. Balances, wallets, staking positions, and smart contracts carried over automatically on a 1:1 basis.

The name Gram carries significant history. Telegram originally named the token Gram when it developed the blockchain in 2018, before a regulatory dispute with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission forced the company to withdraw from the project. The community continued building under the TON banner, and the June 2026 vote restored the original identity. Telegram founder Pavel Durov backed the move as part of a broader plan to deepen Telegram's role in The Open Network and expand $GRAM's use across the platform's services.

The token retains its core functions within the ecosystem, covering transaction fees, staking, and governance. Telegram itself now acts as the network's largest validator, which has raised the strategic stakes around any new derivatives product tied to the asset. Backpack's decision to list $GRAM perps comes as exchange-level interest in the token grows, following reports that Coinbase suspended its own TON perpetual futures product in June 2026.
