Berachain has rebranded its Stablecoin
Berachain has officially relaunched its native stablecoin from HONEY to Bera USD (BUSD), keeping the same smart contract while targeting greater institutional clarity with a dollar-pegged name.
HONEY Becomes Bera USD
@Berachain has officially relaunched its native stablecoin, previously known as $HONEY, under a new name: Bera USD ($BUSD). The underlying smart contract remains unchanged, meaning the rebranding is purely cosmetic at the technical level. The goal, however, is strategic. By adopting a name that immediately signals a dollar-pegged asset, the project is positioning itself more clearly for an institutional audience that may have found the original name ambiguous.
$HONEY was a multi-collateral, crypto-collateralized stablecoin soft-pegged to the U.S. dollar and fully collateralized by a basket of whitelisted USD-pegged stablecoins. It has been widely used across Berachain DeFi as a base trading pair and lending asset. That core function does not change with the rebrand. What changes is the name that greets institutional participants coming to the ecosystem for the first time.
A Familiar Ticker with a Complicated History
The choice of $BUSD is unlikely to pass without comment. The ticker was previously associated with Binance USD, the stablecoin Binance launched in partnership with Paxos. Before its termination, BUSD reached a peak market capitalization of $23 billion in November 2022 , making it one of the largest stablecoins in the market. Binance's stablecoin came under regulatory scrutiny after the New York Department of Financial Services ordered Paxos to stop issuing it. Binance ultimately ended support for BUSD following that order.
That history gives the ticker some baggage, though Berachain's version is a structurally different product operating on an entirely separate chain. Berachain is an Ethereum-compatible Layer 1 blockchain that secures itself with a proof-of-liquidity mechanism, rewarding users who supply liquidity. It operates with a tri-token economy: BERA for transactions and staking, BGT for governance, and the stablecoin for the ecosystem. Whether the shared ticker causes confusion or simply benefits from name recognition remains to be seen.
For now, the rebrand reflects a broader trend among DeFi-native projects recalibrating their messaging as institutional capital increasingly looks toward on-chain infrastructure. A name like Bera USD communicates function at a glance. The question is whether the market will focus on the clarity of the new name or the baggage of a borrowed ticker.
