@coinbase delivered a study in contrasts on Thursday when it reported second-quarter results: record trading market share and a widening GAAP net loss, releasing the numbers ahead of its 5 PM ET earnings call.

Record Share, Shrinking Revenue

Coinbase's crypto trading market share reached a record 10.3% during the quarter, even as total revenue came in at $1.22 billion, down 14% from the prior quarter. The 10.3% figure marked a third consecutive quarter of market share gains, with the company growing its share in both spot and derivatives trading. The gains came despite a tough backdrop: total crypto spot trading volume declined more than 20% from the previous quarter as crypto asset prices fell and market volatility reached multi-year lows.

Against an analyst consensus of $1.29 billion, Coinbase posted a net loss of $359 million. Subscription and services revenue totaled $555 million, representing 48% of net revenue. The company said the subscription figure fell short of its own forecast range of $565 million to $645 million because certain USDC-related commercial agreements closed later than expected and lower crypto asset prices reduced staking revenue.

The loss of $359.5 million, or $1.36 per share, compared with a profit of $1.43 billion, or $5.14 per share, a year earlier. Adjusted EBITDA came in at $207.8 million, well below the analyst estimate of $301.7 million and representing a 31% miss. This was the third straight quarter in the red, though losses have narrowed each time, from $666.7 million in Q4 2025 to $394.1 million in Q1 2026.

Bright Spots: Prediction Markets and USDC

Prediction markets were a clear highlight, with contracts and revenue growing 106% from the previous quarter and exceeding a $100 million quarterly annualized net revenue run rate. Average USDC held across Coinbase products also reached a record $20 billion during the quarter, representing more than 30% of USDC in circulation at quarter-end.

Subscription and services revenue accounted for nearly half of net revenue, while the company also posted its 14th consecutive quarter of positive adjusted EBITDA, citing increased productivity from AI adoption across its engineering teams. Net revenue excluding Bitcoin spot trading stood at 88% in Q2 2026, nearly double the comparable figure from Q2 2020.

Markets focused on the headline loss. $COIN fell roughly 5% after hours to around $154.68, erasing a 2.18% regular-session gain that had left the stock at $163.58. Coinbase's net income is often distorted by accounting rules that require it to value its large crypto holdings at quarter-end market prices, causing reported earnings to swing widely even when no assets are sold.
