Starbase Goes Live as Coinbase Unifies Its Derivatives Stack

Coinbase has launched Starbase, a next-generation matching engine capable of processing more than 100,000 orders per second with sub-millisecond matching latency on dedicated infrastructure. The upgrade is designed to sharpen execution quality and deepen liquidity for institutional derivatives traders.

The move is central to a broader consolidation of Coinbase's derivatives business. Starbase is Deribit's next-generation, high-performance matching engine, and its launch is the centerpiece of the strategic consolidation of Coinbase International Exchange and Deribit into a single, unified, institutional-grade trading venue. Deribit will now run on the same core execution infrastructure as Coinbase International Exchange.

Starbase delivers microsecond execution speeds, designed to facilitate superior price discovery and tighter spreads. The engine is also built to handle extreme market volatility and massive bursts of throughput without performance degradation. For high-frequency traders and institutional market makers, the shift to a binary API layer is expected to be a meaningful step forward in latency performance.

Migration Timeline and What It Means for Traders

On September 9, 2026, Coinbase Advanced will move international derivatives from INTX onto a Deribit-powered gateway running the Starbase engine. Coinbase International Derivatives Exchange perpetuals will be consolidated into Deribit, with Deribit spot markets also set to connect to the liquidity of Coinbase spot markets.

The transition is expected to take approximately 30 minutes, during which all open orders will be canceled, positions settled at mark price, and balances transferred to newly provisioned Deribit subaccounts. Clients who do not wish to migrate must close all positions and their International Exchange accounts by August 28.

A headline new feature arriving with the cutover is options trading, available directly in the Coinbase app for eligible users in select jurisdictions from September 9, 2026, covering listed options on $BTC, $ETH, and other assets. Coinbase has also said that all of its perpetual futures products are expected to migrate to the Starbase engine later this year.

The migration follows Coinbase's earlier agreement to acquire Deribit in a $2.9 billion deal. By unifying liquidity previously split across two platforms, Coinbase expects to offer broader product coverage, including a full options suite, a more scalable matching engine, and enhanced risk infrastructure.
