Kenya Puts Decades of Exam Records on the Blockchain

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has officially launched a nationwide e-certification system built on the @Avax C-Chain, anchoring more than 15 million historical academic records dating back to 1989. The deployment converts decades of examination data, along with nearly 1 million new KCSE 2025 certificates, into immutable digital assets, with the stated goal of eliminating document forgery and cutting the administrative lag that has long frustrated job seekers, employers, and universities.

KNEC has unveiled a new e-certificate platform that allows Kenyans to apply for, download, and verify KCSE certificates online, marking a major shift from the traditional paper-based system by enabling students, alumni, and institutions to access certificates electronically from anywhere. Every digital certificate issued through the platform contains a blockchain verification hash to facilitate authentication by institutions and authorised users.

Verification Transformed From Months to Seconds

The practical impact on verification speed is significant. KNEC has unveiled a new digital system that enables the instant verification of KCSE certificates, marking a decisive shift from the manual process that has long frustrated job seekers, employers, and universities. KNEC ICT officer Francis Lekupe said the previous manual system relied heavily on physical checks that were slow and prone to error, noting that employers had no reliable way to distinguish between genuine documents and sophisticated forgeries.

KCSE certificates issued from 2023 onwards have been embedded with QR codes secured using the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), a technology widely used to protect sensitive digital information. For older certificates, KNEC has provided an alternative through the e-certificate system, an online platform designed to complement the QR code system.

The council has also introduced a separate verification portal for organisations such as universities, employers, government agencies, and professional bodies. For organisations handling many applications, the system supports bulk verification of up to 1,000 certificates in a single request by uploading a CSV file.

The rollout of the e-certificate system is viewed as a key milestone in Kenya's transition toward fully digital public service delivery, aligning with broader government efforts to enhance transparency and efficiency in education management.
