Polygon's Latest Upgrade Now Brings Smoother Transactions
Polygon's Ithaca hard fork went live on mainnet at block 50,185,000, introducing automatic producer rotation to eliminate network stalls and strengthen the Open Money Stack payments rail.
Ithaca Hard Fork Goes Live on Polygon Mainnet
@0xPolygon activated its Ithaca hard fork on July 29, 2026, at block height 50,185,000, marking the network's latest step in a sustained push to build reliable infrastructure for high-frequency payments.
The core change is an automatic producer rotation mechanism. According to Polygon, the previous architecture was vulnerable to block producer failures that could trigger network stalls lasting up to 15 minutes. The Ithaca upgrade addresses that directly, introducing automatic failover so transaction flow is maintained even when a producer goes offline.
Beyond failover, the upgrade also brings new tools to filter out destabilizing transactions and improves visibility for node operators, who have been urged to update their software promptly to maintain compatibility and network security.
Building Toward "Always-On" Payment Settlement
The timing is deliberate. Polygon's Open Money Stack, its modular framework for stablecoin-based payments and cross-border value transfers, entered technical preview on July 27. The Ithaca upgrade is designed to underpin that stack with the reliability demanded by commercial payment applications. Polygon describes the ambition plainly: an "always-on" settlement rail for high-frequency commerce.
Ithaca is the fourth major network optimization Polygon has shipped in roughly five months, following the Zurich and Giugliano releases. The Zurich hard fork, which came earlier in July, cut block times to 1.5 seconds and raised the block gas limit to 160 million. An earlier upgrade pushed peak throughput to over 5,000 payments per second, a figure Polygon says matches traditional card network speeds at substantially lower cost.
The cadence of upgrades reflects a broader strategic shift. Polygon Labs unveiled the Open Money Stack in January 2026 as a framework to move stablecoin payments and cross-border transfers onto the chain, targeting financial institutions and fintech firms as primary users. Infrastructure reliability, not just throughput, is central to that pitch.
