Solana Slashes Slot Time to 350 Ms
Solana has cut its mainnet slot time from 400ms to 350ms, the first reduction since the network launched. The upgrade is the opening stage of SIMD-0525, a four-step plan targeting a 200ms slot time.
Solana has reduced its mainnet slot time from 400 milliseconds to 350 milliseconds, marking the first such change since the network launched. The reduction took effect at the start of epoch 1020 on August 21, 2026, and represents a meaningful step in the network's push toward faster block production.
What Changed and Why It Matters
Slot time sets how often the blockchain writes a new block, so a shorter interval lets the network add blocks more frequently. Shortening the interval reduces transaction latency and speeds confirmation times, which has a direct impact on everyday users waiting for their transactions to settle. As a knock-on effect, epochs now last roughly 42 hours rather than the previous 48, and validators rotate block-production duties every 1.4 seconds instead of every 1.6 seconds.
The upgrade also doubles as a censorship-resistance measure, narrowing the time a leader holds a monopoly over block building and improving fairness for both validators and users by limiting individual leader control windows.
A Phased Road to 200ms
The change is the first step under SIMD-0525, a Solana improvement proposal that introduces four progressively shorter slot configurations at 350ms, 300ms, 250ms, and 200ms. The proposal was approved and merged on May 14. Each step sits behind its own feature gate and requires fresh validator approval, with each stage carrying the same one-epoch delay before activation.
If SIMD-0525 reaches its final stage, Solana's target slot time will fall 50% from 400ms to 200ms. Blocks would arrive twice as frequently, but the upgrade is designed to keep theoretical compute capacity per second broadly constant, making lower latency rather than raw compute expansion the central objective.
The slot time reductions are also happening alongside a broader consensus overhaul. Anza is developing Alpenglow, a consensus redesign targeting median finality of around 150 milliseconds, with activation expected via Agave 4.3 in October 2026. The two improvements work on different timescales: faster slots produce blocks more often, while Alpenglow makes each block irreversible sooner.
Solana Foundation Vice President of Technology Jacob Creech confirmed the milestone, describing the network as entering a "new era of 350ms" and identifying 300ms as the next target.
