South Korea Migrates National Capital Markets to Avalanche
South Korea's Financial Services Commission and Korea Securities Depository are migrating the country's capital markets to the Avalanche blockchain, covering stocks, bonds, and funds across the full asset lifecycle.
South Korea is taking one of the most significant steps in institutional blockchain adoption to date. The Financial Services Commission (FSC) and the Korea Securities Depository (KSD) have begun migrating the country's national capital markets architecture to the @Avax platform, placing the entire securities ecosystem, covering stocks, bonds, and funds, onto an on-chain framework.
Full Asset Lifecycle on Chain
The scope of the migration is broad. The transition covers every stage of the asset lifecycle, from issuance through to secondary trading, clearing, settlement, and investor rights protection. This is not a pilot or sandbox exercise. It is a government-sponsored mandate to rebuild core financial market infrastructure on a public blockchain.
The legal foundation for the move was laid earlier this year. South Korea's National Assembly approved amendments in January recognising blockchain-based distributed ledgers as valid securities registries, permitting the issuance and circulation of token securities ahead of a planned February 2027 launch. Under those amendments, distributed ledger technology now counts as a legally valid electronic registration ledger, with the KSD sitting as a node within that ledger.
South Korea will expand the range of assets eligible for tokenization to conventional financial products such as stocks, bonds, and funds, reflecting the government's intent to build blockchain-based infrastructure for issuing, managing, and trading securities.
Avalanche's Growing Role in Korean Finance
The choice of Avalanche as the underlying network is consistent with a broader pattern of institutional adoption in the region. Avalanche's architecture is designed for purpose-built blockchains, aimed at solving scalability and regulatory compliance challenges. Those qualities have already attracted a range of Korean financial and public-sector clients to the network.
The KSD migration adds significant weight to that trend. The move places tokenized securities within the country's broader effort to modernize traditional financial markets, potentially bringing blockchain-based investment products closer to systems used for mainstream securities settlement and trading.
Samsung SDS has separately been contracted to support the technical build-out. Samsung SDS has been contracted to build a token securities management platform connecting KSD's existing electronic securities account system with blockchain-based data, with completion targeted for February 2027.
Taken together, the FSC's roadmap signals that South Korea is moving decisively to reconcile institutional-grade legal certainty with on-chain infrastructure, using Avalanche as the settlement layer for one of Asia's most developed capital markets.
