Wintermute is betting big on AI Infrastructure

From Crypto Market Maker to Multi-Asset Trading Powerhouse

@wintermute_t is pushing well beyond its crypto roots. The London-based algorithmic trading firm is pursuing a $1 billion expansion strategy aimed at bridging digital asset liquidity with traditional financial markets, using high-frequency trading systems and AI-powered data centers as its engine.

The five-year funding plan centres on building high-performance computing infrastructure capable of supporting autonomous trading across equities, commodities, and foreign exchange. The ambition is significant: by 2027, Wintermute expects more than 50 percent of its revenue to come from non-digital markets, putting it in direct competition with established proprietary trading firms such as Jane Street and Virtu.

The strategy is already taking concrete shape. In August 2026, Wintermute announced that its affiliate Wintermute USA LLC had registered as a broker-dealer with the SEC and FINRA, marking a formal expansion into U.S. regulated markets. The registration establishes Wintermute USA LLC as a regulated proprietary trading firm, enabling it to provide liquidity to national securities exchanges and OTC counterparties, trade traditional equities and equity options, and act as an Authorized Participant for exchange-traded products, including those tied to digital assets.

Competing With Wall Street's Elite

The registration enables Wintermute to act as an authorized participant for crypto ETPs, meaning it can create and redeem ETF shares directly with issuers, a role that gives it structural access to the arbitrage mechanism that keeps ETF prices aligned with their underlying assets. This places Wintermute alongside established APs such as Jane Street, Virtu, and Goldman Sachs.

Globally, the Wintermute group facilitates over $10 billion in average daily trading volume and provides liquidity across more than 60 centralized and decentralized exchanges. That existing infrastructure gives the firm a credible foundation from which to compete in traditional markets, where speed, scale, and system reliability are the primary differentiators.

Wintermute CEO Evgeny Gaevoy has framed the move as a long-term structural bet. "Our long-term conviction has always been that digital asset markets will evolve in more than one direction," Gaevoy said. "Digital assets and traditional finance will continue to develop in parallel, intersect in new ways, and ultimately integrate more deeply. As the landscape evolves, the firms that succeed will be those that have technical and operational know-how to operate in both."

If the revenue targets hold, Wintermute's transformation from a crypto-native market maker into a diversified, AI-driven trading firm could serve as a template for others in the digital asset industry looking to expand their reach into conventional financial markets.
