XRP slots into the middle of trades that would price badly on their own
XRP Ledger's auto-bridging feature uses $XRP as a native intermediary to improve trade execution and liquidity across token pairs on the XRPL decentralized exchange, now enhanced by AMM pools.
Most traders on the XRP Ledger (@XRPLF) never see it happen, but $XRP is quietly stepping into the middle of thousands of trades every day, improving prices that would otherwise come out worse.
How Auto-Bridging Works
When two tokens on the XRP Ledger lack a deep direct market between them, the ledger does not simply accept a poor rate. Instead, it routes the trade through $XRP automatically. Any offer on the XRP Ledger's decentralized exchange that would exchange two tokens can potentially use XRP as an intermediary currency in a synthetic order book, because auto-bridging serves to improve liquidity across all asset pairs by using XRP when doing so is cheaper than trading directly. The protocol triggers this only when the bridged route produces a better outcome, not by default on every trade.
A single order can also take both paths simultaneously. Offer execution can use a combination of direct and auto-bridged offers to achieve the best total exchange rate. Part of the order fills against the direct book, and the remainder routes through $XRP, with the ledger handling the split automatically.
The same logic applies to cross-currency payments. If you want to trade USD for EUR, you may find a better deal by trading USD for XRP, followed by XRP for EUR. A dollar-to-peso payment, for example, can pass through $XRP when that corridor offers a cheaper path.
Liquidity Requirements and the AMM Addition
Auto-bridging only delivers better prices when the $XRP pairs involved hold sufficient liquidity. Thin XRP order books would erode rather than improve the final rate, so the depth of those markets matters. The XRP Ledger has possibly the world's oldest decentralized exchange, operating continuously since the XRP Ledger's launch in 2012.
The liquidity picture has expanded since 2024. The XLS-30 amendment adds non-custodial automated market maker (AMM) as a native feature to the XRPL DEX, which offers an opportunity to earn returns to those who provide liquidity to the AMM and decreases slippage when trading the long tail of tokens. A major catalyst for improved routing came with the XLS-30 proposal, which integrated Automated Market Makers directly into the XRP Ledger alongside its traditional order-book-based DEX, meaning the pathfinding algorithm can now pull liquidity from both AMM pools and order books simultaneously, selecting the combination that produces the best price.
The practical effect is that $XRP functions as quiet infrastructure inside the ledger, connecting markets that would otherwise struggle to price efficiently against each other, without the user needing to do anything at all.
