Avalanche marks six years since its genesis block was minted
Avalanche turns six years old as @avax commemorates the message written into block zero on September 9, 2020. Here is a look at where the network and $AVAX supply stand today.
Six years from block zero to a live network
On September 9, 2020, @avax published a message written into block zero of the Avalanche blockchain. It read: "From Snowflake to Avalanche. Per consensum ad astra." The public mainnet followed twelve days later. Avalanche launched mainnet on September 21, 2020, after Ava Labs, founded by Cornell professor Emin Gün Sirer, raised $42 million in a public token sale.
The name in the inscription is a nod to the network's consensus mechanism. The network is built around a family of consensus protocols collectively called Snow, with Snowman serving as the linear-chain variant. The Latin phrase roughly translates to "through consensus, to the stars," a fitting motto for a project that set out to challenge Ethereum's dominance in smart contract infrastructure.
Where $AVAX supply stands today
Avalanche has a supply cap of 720 million $AVAX tokens. The coin's supply does not only grow, it also shrinks as fees are burned. Transaction fees are burned, permanently removing the paid $AVAX from circulation. Roughly 5.1 million coins have been burned so far, concentrated mostly on the C-Chain. Total supply now stands at 463.44 million, of which 431.77 million circulates across 182,130 holders.
The burn rate, however, faces structural headwinds. The Etna upgrade reduced the minimum C-Chain base fee by roughly 96%, and by Q2 2026, the median transaction fee had fallen 99.6% year-over-year to just $0.000014. Transaction fees paid in $AVAX are burned, but when each transaction costs a tiny fraction of a cent, millions of additional transactions generate relatively little $AVAX demand. Meanwhile, staking rewards continuously mint new $AVAX, meaning the network can become cheaper, faster, and busier without producing the scarcity investors expected.
On the activity side, the network has continued to grow. Avalanche C-Chain processed a record 235.6 million transactions in Q2 2026, while stablecoin transfers reached $84.4 billion and real-world assets on the ecosystem totaled roughly $1.65 billion. Six years on, the network that began with a message in block zero is bigger than ever, even as the economics of its native token remain a live debate.
