$BTC has overtaken Tesla by market capitalisation, cementing its place as a major force in global asset rankings. Bitcoin's market cap reached approximately $1.635 trillion on September 19, placing the cryptocurrency above Tesla in global asset rankings. Bitcoin traded near $81,419 after gaining about 4%, while Tesla shares fell roughly 0.5% to $364.27 during the market comparison.

Bitcoin Climbs the Global Rankings

CompaniesMarketCap ranked Bitcoin 13th among the largest global assets, with Tesla ranked 14th at a valuation of $1.438 trillion. Samsung sits just below at 15th place. The difference produced a gap of $197 billion, or nearly 14%.

CompaniesMarketCap lists gold, major technology companies, and other financial assets alongside cryptocurrencies, making the ranking a broad cross-asset measure rather than a crypto-specific one. Bitcoin's position can change daily, as it trades continuously while Tesla trades during stock-market hours.

Tesla's Bitcoin Connection

There is an additional layer to the comparison: Tesla holds Bitcoin on its own balance sheet. Tesla reported 11,509 BTC in its June 30, 2026, second-quarter filing, with a $386 million cost basis and a $674 million fair value at quarter-end. At Bitcoin's snapshot price of $81,419, those coins would have been worth approximately $937 million.

Nearly $1 billion is a substantial treasury position, but it represents only about 0.07% of Tesla's $1.438 trillion market capitalisation. Bitcoin's $197 billion lead over Tesla was also about 210 times larger than the estimated value of Tesla's holdings. Tesla's Bitcoin position connects the two assets, but it is far too small to explain their place in the ranking.

Tesla entered the market in 2021 with a $1.5 billion digital-asset purchase. By the end of 2022, the company had converted approximately 75% of its Bitcoin into fiat currency, according to its regulatory disclosures. The remaining position has since become more valuable as Bitcoin's price recovered.

The milestone is a useful sentiment marker for the crypto market, though analysts note it is not a fundamental comparison. The market cap measure does not equate a digital asset with an operating company. Bitcoin's cap reflects price multiplied by circulating supply, while Tesla's reflects shares outstanding multiplied by stock price. The two figures can move at different speeds, as investors price monetary demand, corporate earnings, debt, and future cash flows.
