Whales bought the dip before Wall Street did, with August looming

Bitcoin whale wallets added roughly 40,100 BTC worth $2.6 billion in late July, ahead of a $233 million single-day surge in US spot Bitcoin ETF inflows led by BlackRock's IBIT.

Large Bitcoin holders moved first. While institutional desks were still absorbing outflows, on-chain data shows whale wallets quietly bought the dip in the final week of July, setting up what became a sharp institutional reversal heading into August.

Whales Absorb $2.6 Billion Before Institutions Follow

$BTC whales started adding before Wall Street did. Wallets holding 1,000 to 10,000 BTC lifted their share of supply from about 21.11% on July 23 to 21.25% by month-end, according to Santiment data. The larger 10,000 to 100,000 BTC cohort had been trimming since July 22, bottoming near 11.19% on July 27, before turning back up to 11.25% into the close of the month.

Those shifts read as small in percentage terms, yet the combined 0.20% gain across both cohorts, applied to Bitcoin's roughly 20.06 million circulating supply, works out to about 40,100 BTC, worth close to $2.6 billion.

The Bitcoin price decline did not stop large holders from building positions. Santiment described the market setup as constructive because supply appears to be moving toward stronger hands. Derivatives positioning leaned the same way. A whale-retail divergence reading of +21.8 on the daily timeframe flagged large traders as far more tilted toward long exposure than retail, a setup the dashboard labeled bullish.

ETF Desks Reverse Course, BlackRock Leads the Charge

The institutional bid for Bitcoin returned with force. After ending a four-day losing streak one session earlier, US spot Bitcoin ETFs drew more than $233 million as fresh capital flowed into seven funds, with no product reporting outflows. BlackRock's IBIT led the Bitcoin category with $183.38 million in inflows, accounting for nearly four-fifths of the daily total. Bitwise's BITB followed with $20.74 million, while Fidelity's FBTC added $15.50 million.

The small gains continue a modestly positive trajectory throughout July, following eight consecutive weeks of outflows dating back to the week ended May 15. US-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs have now logged their first three-week inflows streak since early May. Still, the context matters: IBIT has attracted about $350 million in net inflows during July, helping lead the category's recovery, though that monthly gain remains small beside the fund's reported outflows of $1.41 billion in May and $3.55 billion in June.

Whale cohorts, futures positioning, and ETF cash all turned higher at once, in that order. Whether that marks accumulation before a bounce or a crowded bet into Bitcoin's cruelest month is the wager August will settle.
