Pi Network has filed for regulatory registration in the European Union under the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA), a step that could eventually open the door to legal listings and partnerships across the EU's 27 member states. But the filing itself does not mean the PI token has full approval to trade freely in Europe. It is one step in a compliance process that started in late 2025 and is still unfolding in mid-2026.

What Did Pi Network File With EU Regulators?

PiBit Ltd, the legal entity representing Pi Network, submitted a white paper application under MiCA in November 2025. On January 15, 2026, the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) registered that white paper under filing entry number 549. A white paper, in this context, is a formal disclosure document that explains how a crypto project works, what risks it carries, and how its tokenomics are structured. Filing one is a legal requirement for any crypto-asset offered publicly in the EU under MiCA.

How Does MiCA Registration Actually Work?

MiCA is the EU's uniform framework for crypto-assets, in force since June 2023, with full enforcement across all member states reached on July 1, 2026. It sets rules for transparency, disclosure, and supervision of both token issuers and crypto-asset service providers (CASPs).

What ESMA's White Paper Registration Means

Registering a white paper means ESMA has logged the disclosure on its public register. It confirms the project supplied the required information. It does not mean ESMA has reviewed or endorsed the token, and it does not grant a license to operate as a regulated crypto-asset service provider.

Why a Filing Is Not the Same as Approval

This distinction has caused confusion inside the Pi community. In February 2026, claims spread on social media that PiBit Ltd had received full MiCA approval and an EU-wide "crypto passport." No official confirmation from Pi Network or European regulators backed that claim at the time.

A similar unverified claim about approval on June 11, 2026, also circulated without confirmation. Pi Network's own MiCA white paper, filed in late 2025, lists its crypto-asset service provider status as "not applicable" and names OKX Europe as the trading platform involved, meaning trading access runs through OKX's own CASP license rather than a license held by Pi Network itself. Community members who track the project closely have pointed out that a completed filing is a milestone, not a finish line, and that full CASP authorization is a separate, later step.

What Other Compliance Steps Has Pi Network Taken?

Beyond the ESMA filing, Pi Network has taken several other steps tied to European compliance:

  • Worked with legal advisers in Austria and the UK on MiCA-related structuring
  • Had SocialChain, infrastructure connected to Pi, complete GDPR certification
  • Saw the Valour Pi exchange-traded product list on Sweden's Spotlight Stock Market in August 2025
  • Joined the ISO 20022 messaging standard used by banks and payment networks

How Is PI Trading Right Now?

As of August 9 to 10, 2026, PI traded near $0.086 to $0.091, with a market capitalization of roughly $974 million and a circulating supply of about 11.04 billion tokens out of a 100 billion maximum supply. That is down more than 96 percent from its all-time high of $3.00, set on February 26, 2025. The Relative Strength Index sat in the neutral range near 45 to 53 depending on the source, suggesting the token was neither overbought nor oversold.

Separately, the Pi Core Team launched Protocol 26 on July 30, 2026, giving node operators until August 11 to migrate or be disconnected from the mainnet, an unrelated technical deadline that has added to short-term market attention.

What Could European Approval Mean for Pi Network's Future?

If Pi Network eventually secures full MiCA authorization, not just white paper registration, it could apply for a regulatory "passport" letting it operate across all 27 EU states under one license. That would let regulated European exchanges list PI with fewer legal barriers and could make institutions more comfortable engaging with the project. Real utility, such as app activity and developer adoption on the Pi blockchain, would still matter more than paperwork alone in determining long-term demand.

What Are the Risks and Open Questions?

  • Full CASP authorization has not been confirmed by ESMA or any national regulator as of this writing
  • Roughly 775.8 million additional PI tokens are scheduled for release in late 2026, which can pressure price
  • The European Commission opened a consultation on reviewing MiCA itself, with responses due by August 31, 2026, meaning rules could still shift
  • Unverified approval claims have repeatedly spread on social media faster than official confirmation

Conclusion

Pi Network has registered its white paper with ESMA and taken related compliance steps, including legal work in Austria and the UK, GDPR certification for its infrastructure, and joining the ISO 20022 standard. These are documented, verifiable actions toward operating under EU crypto rules.

Full MiCA authorization, and the EU-wide passporting that comes with it, has not yet been confirmed. Pi's future in Europe depends on that next regulatory step, along with real adoption of its network.
