Canton Network leads DeFiLlama's chain fee rankings
Canton Network has topped DeFiLlama's chain fee rankings with $1.47M in 24 hours and $49.73M over 30 days, outpacing Tron and BNB Chain. Here is what the numbers mean and why fees on Canton are burned rather than retained.
@CantonNetwork has claimed the top spot on DeFiLlama's chain fee rankings, posting $1.47 million in fees over the past 24 hours and $49.73 million across the last 30 days. Tron ranks second with $923,782 in daily fees and $24.01 million over the month, while $BNB Chain sits third at $833,719 and $21.01 million respectively.
An Institutional Network Built on a Fee-Burn Model
Canton is a permissioned, privacy-preserving network used primarily by financial institutions for settlement and asset tokenization. Unlike most public chains, fees on Canton do not flow to validators or a treasury. Fees, such as Global Synchronizer traffic fees, are paid in Canton Coin (CC) and then burned, permanently reducing circulating supply. This burn-and-mint equilibrium keeps supply responsive to demand and ties value to network usage.
Transaction volumes on Canton trace to institutional workflows rather than retail DeFi activity, which shapes how the fee comparison reads. The chain is purpose-built for capital markets, with primary applications spanning tokenized securities, collateral, repo, custody, payments, settlement, and institutional digital assets.
Heavyweight Backing and a Growing Footprint
Canton is a privacy-enabled Layer-1 blockchain built by Digital Asset. The network launched in May 2023 with backing from over 30 financial institutions, including Goldman Sachs, BNP Paribas, and Deloitte. Since then, the institutional roster has expanded considerably. JPMorgan's Kinexys unit moved to issue its JPMD deposit token on Canton, and DTCC is working to tokenize US Treasuries it custodies.
Digital Asset also closed a $355 million funding round led by a16z crypto, with HSBC, Apollo, BNP Paribas, CME, Tradeweb, and more than 20 other institutional names joining. The fee data arriving at the top of DeFiLlama's rankings is, in large part, a reflection of that institutional build-out accelerating on-chain.
The Canton fee ranking is not a new development. Canton Network captured roughly 42 percent of all blockchain fees in the first quarter of 2026, climbing to the top of Messari's fee rankings as institutional activity on the network grew. The chain generated about $193 million of the $457 million in total fees across 21 blockchains that Messari tracked, according to its Q1 2026 State of Blockchains report. The latest DeFiLlama snapshot confirms the trend has continued into September.
