The University of Michigan has launched "Wolverine Rewards," a blockchain-powered fan loyalty platform built in partnership with @uptop_xyz on the $AVAX network, giving the university's sprawling athletics community a single digital identity to earn and redeem rewards across its programs.

A Single Identity Across 29 Sports

The platform gives fans, students, and alumni one unified digital identifier that tracks engagement in real time across all 29 of Michigan's sports programs as well as affiliated retailers. Points can be redeemed instantly for tickets, apparel, and more, replacing what the university described as an outdated, fragmented process with a fast, consolidated data layer that recognises fan loyalty wherever it happens.

Uptop is a white-label fan loyalty platform built on Avalanche, enabling sports teams and entertainment brands to directly engage with their fans through personalised experiences, targeted rewards, and seamless transactions. For Michigan, that infrastructure now sits beneath one of the largest collegiate athletics operations in the United States.

A Growing Playbook in College and Pro Sports

The Wolverine Rewards launch is part of a broader push by Uptop and Avalanche into organised sports. In October 2024, the Cleveland Cavaliers launched Cavs Rewards, giving fans a chance to connect with the team by turning everyday purchases into experiences, memorabilia, and collectibles, with Uptop leveraging the Avalanche blockchain to deliver a secure and scalable programme.

The model has since spread across both professional and collegiate sport. Baylor Athletics launched a fan rewards platform with Uptop on Avalanche, where fans connect with their favourite teams, earn at participating Baylor sponsors, and use points for tickets, merchandise, and access. The University of Nevada, Reno, also launched Wolf Pack Rewards with Uptop, built on Avalanche.

Uptop also plans to launch a permissioned Layer 1 blockchain, the Uptop Network, on Avalanche to manage loyalty point ledgers and offer greater interoperability. That infrastructure ambition signals the company is positioning itself as a durable layer beneath collegiate and professional sport, rather than a single-team solution.

By using Avalanche to create a scalable, open-loop rewards ecosystem, rewards are owned by fans and are redeemable, tradable, and saved for long-term value. The shift from passive consumer to active participant is designed to create stronger loyalty and more meaningful engagement, while giving teams measurable commercial data in return.

For Michigan, the move reflects a wider trend of major athletic departments adopting blockchain infrastructure not as a novelty, but as a practical tool for fan data and commercial revenue.
