Coinbase Files SEC Notices for Single-Stock Perpetuals

Coinbase has taken a formal step toward bringing single-stock perpetual contracts to the United States, filing two SEC notice registrations dated September 1 through its regulated derivatives exchange and brokerage. Coinbase Derivatives filed Form 1-N to register as a security futures exchange, while Coinbase Financial Markets submitted Form BD-N as a limited-purpose security futures broker-dealer.

The move could give US traders leveraged exposure to individual stocks without owning the underlying shares. Traders receive price exposure rather than shareholder rights.

What US Users Can Access Today

US users can already trade Coinbase perpetual-style futures tracking artificial intelligence, China, defense, and the top 100 tech stocks. Coinbase already offers single-stock perpetuals internationally to eligible customers, with its overseas lineup including Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Nvidia, Meta, and Tesla. US persons were excluded from that offshore offering at launch.

Single-stock futures fall under the joint oversight of the SEC and CFTC. Coinbase Chief Policy Officer Faryar Shirzad said the filings represent the first regulatory step toward bringing equity perpetuals onshore, adding that product approval from the CFTC would come next. The filings do not provide a launch date, a list of supported stocks, or proposed leverage limits.

The registration notices follow several additions to Coinbase's derivatives business during 2026, including CFTC staff granting Coinbase Financial Markets regulatory relief in May connected to eligible US institutions accessing certain derivatives listed on Deribit, the offshore platform Coinbase acquired. The company says it will be collaborating closely with the SEC and CFTC to bring more major financial products onshore.
