Ethereum Surges as Exchange Balances Keep Falling

Ethereum's exchange supply dropped roughly 15% between June and August 2026, with over 1.15 million ETH leaving centralized platforms as staking hits records and corporate treasuries accumulate. ETH recently surged 18% in 24 hours, touching $2,250 for the first time in three months.

Ethereum's available supply on centralized exchanges has been shrinking at a steady pace, and a sharp price move is now drawing attention to what has been building quietly beneath the surface. According to data from Santiment, exchange balances fell roughly 15% between June 2 and August 18, 2026, with around 1.15 million ETH moving off platforms during that stretch. $ETH subsequently surged 18% in a single 24-hour period, hitting $2,250 for the first time in three months.

Staking and Corporate Accumulation Tighten Supply

The exchange exodus is being driven by two structural forces: staking and corporate treasury accumulation. Staked ETH has climbed to a record 41.7 million, roughly one-third of all ETH in existence. The accumulation has been steady rather than sudden, with deposits hovering near 36 million ETH through late 2025 before climbing from February and then accelerating between June and August.

Corporate treasuries have added another layer of sustained demand. In 2026, corporate Ethereum treasuries have surged as firms accumulate ETH to diversify balance sheets and support staking yields, with tracked public filings showing corporate entities collectively holding over 6.1 million ETH, worth nearly $19 billion. Unlike traders, this cohort stakes for yield and rarely sells, removing supply from circulation.

BitMine Immersion is the most prominent example. The company had approximately 4.9 million ETH staked as of July 12, equal to about 85% of its Ethereum holdings, and generated $45.7 million from staking and validation during the quarter ended May 31. SharpLink Gaming is another significant holder, having placed the majority of its Ethereum treasury into staking and continuing to earn ETH rewards even as weaker prices contributed to a $394.3 million second-quarter loss.

A Supply Squeeze Taking Shape

Ethereum reserves on exchange platforms continue to shrink while an increasing portion of supply remains locked in staking, a dual dynamic that progressively tightens the liquidity available in the market and strengthens the scenario of a supply squeeze likely to impact price formation.

The decline in exchange reserves has persisted uninterrupted through both price increases and correction phases. According to CryptoQuant analysts, this persistence reflects a structural reduction of immediately accessible supply rather than an ephemeral withdrawal cycle. With staking near record levels and corporate buyers continuing to accumulate, the conditions that preceded the recent 18% price jump appear unlikely to reverse quickly.
