Why Did Vitalik Buterin Put Quantum Safety First In Ethereum's Roadmap?

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin shared an updated roadmap on August 10. The biggest change is that: quantum safety is now the top goal. Buterin compared his old 2023 roadmap to Ethereum's newer plan, called the Strawmap. He explained what stayed the same, what got dropped, and what is brand new.

Buterin said the two roadmaps still overlap a lot. But some priorities have shifted since 2023.

Quantum Safety Moves Up The List

Ethereum uses a type of digital signature to approve transactions. This signature could one day be broken by a powerful quantum computer. That risk is why Buterin moved quantum safety higher on the list.

Technologies That Got Cut Or Replaced

A few older plans lost their spot on the roadmap. Buterin's post lists these changes:

• VDFs, or Verifiable Delay Functions, were pushed down the list. These are tools meant to make Ethereum's randomness harder to game.
• Several planned upgrades to the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) were also pushed down.
• Verkle trees, an older plan to shrink the data needed to check account balances, were dropped. They were replaced by a unified binary tree, and then by a newer design Buterin calls PBT.
• State expiry, an old plan to let the network forget unused data, was replaced by a new state model.

What New Ideas Appeared That Were Not In The 2023 Plan?

Some items on the Strawmap are completely new. They were not part of the 2023 roadmap at all.

Privacy Tools Get First-Class Attention

Buterin listed several new privacy tools. These include keyed nonces, recent roots, a lean privacy pool, and something he calls wormholes. Together, these tools would make it harder to see who is sending money to whom. The list also includes part of a plan called FOCIL. FOCIL forces block producers to include transactions the rest of the network has already seen.

Post-Quantum Scaling And zkzk Frames

Buterin also connected quantum safety with scaling. This includes leanSPHINCS, a signature system built on hash functions instead of the math that quantum computers could break. It also includes zkzk frames, a plan Buterin proposed on June 5. 

Post-quantum signatures take up more space than today's signatures. zkzk frames let a block builder combine many signatures into one small proof. This keeps transaction fees low.

Could The EVM Eventually Be Replaced?

The Strawmap hints at a big change: Ethereum may one day run on something other than the EVM.

What About Ethereum's Issuance Debate?

Buterin's post did not talk about how much new ETH validators earn. Vanessa Grellet, a managing partner at Arche Capital, pointed to EIP-8363, a plan called the tapered issuance burn. This proposal would lower validator rewards as more ETH gets staked. Dankrad Feist, a researcher at Tempo, wrote on July 4 that the roadmap's three-to-four-year timeline is too slow. He said AI tools could help finish the work in about one year.

What This Means For Ethereum Holders

None of these ideas are locked in yet. No official EIP has been approved for most of them. The Strawmap is still Buterin's own summary of work from many Ethereum researchers. For everyday holders, this update shows that Ethereum's future security plans now focus more on quantum safety and privacy than they did in 2023.
