Monero Surges as THORChain Opens Direct Monero Trading
Monero gained more than 45% in August 2026, its best monthly performance since April 2021, as THORChain version 3.20 introduced native XMR swaps with Bitcoin, Ethereum, and stablecoins. Open interest nearly doubled and short liquidations vastly exceeded longs.
Monero ($XMR) has posted its strongest monthly performance in more than four years, gaining over 45% in August 2026 and rising roughly 10% in a single 24-hour window. The last time the privacy-focused cryptocurrency delivered a comparable monthly gain was April 2021.
THORChain 3.20 Brings Native XMR Swaps
The rally coincides with a significant protocol upgrade from THORChain. THORChain announced the launch of version 3.20, an upgrade introducing native support for Monero ($XMR) and Zcash (ZEC) swaps. The timing matters: until now, moving between privacy coins such as XMR or ZEC and the wider crypto market has required users to rely on centralized exchanges, custodial services, or additional intermediary steps.
With THORChain 3.20, users can natively swap XMR and ZEC against assets including Bitcoin ($BTC), Ethereum ($ETH), and stablecoins directly through THORChain. No wrapped versions of XMR or ZEC are required, and users do not need to create an account or hand custody of their assets to a centralized entity. That is a notable shift for Monero holders in particular. Access to the broader crypto market has become an increasingly important issue for XMR holders as Monero continues to be removed or restricted by centralized exchanges.
In addition to Monero and Zcash integration, version 3.20 introduces Protocol-Owned Liquidity (POL) and a new Stable Reserve, alongside renewed support for Solana, Base, and BNB. When sufficient inventory is available, the Stable Reserve can complete an eligible stable-to-stable swap at a 1:1 rate with no liquidity fee and no slippage.
Derivatives Market Signals Strong Demand
The price action has been accompanied by a sharp move in derivatives markets. According to Coinglass, a spike in Monero open interest was one of the key highlights in August, surging from as low as $131 million on August 2 to approach $260 million. Short liquidations were nearly 10 times as high as long liquidations during the move, a dynamic that can amplify upward price momentum as bearish bets are forcibly closed.
Rising open interest alongside an advancing price typically indicates that new positions are entering the market and supporting the prevailing trend. In the current context, the combined increase in price and open interest suggests that traders are opening fresh long positions rather than the rally being driven only by short covering.
The THORChain upgrade offers a structural reason for renewed interest beyond short-term speculation. Over the past several years, centralized exchanges have been steadily delisting privacy coins under regulatory pressure. Binance dropped Monero in multiple jurisdictions, and OKX followed. A decentralized, non-custodial alternative for XMR swaps could help sustain demand if that trend continues.
