PEPE jumps 15% as memecoins rally alongside the broader market rebound
PEPE surged 15% on the day and 17% on the week as a broad memecoin rally swept Dogecoin, Shiba Inu, and Pudgy Penguins' PENGU into double-digit daily gains amid a wider crypto market rebound.
PEPE Posts Double-Digit Gains as Memecoin Bid Returns
$PEPE is trading at $0.0000031127, up 15% over the past 24 hours and 17% on the week, according to CoinMarketCap. The bulk of that weekly gain arrived in a single breakout move that began on Tuesday, and the token currently holds the number 50 spot by market cap. Daily trading volume for PEPE on August 20, 2026 reached $502,807,156, reflecting a sharp pickup in activity.
PEPE carries no revenue and no reserves. Its price moves on sentiment, social media activity, exchange listings, and broader crypto market trends. That dynamic was on full display this week, as a broad risk-on shift across crypto markets funnelled fresh capital into the memecoin sector.
Wider Memecoin Sector Joins the Move
The rally was not isolated to $PEPE. Dogecoin ($DOGE), Shiba Inu ($SHIB), and Pudgy Penguins' $PENGU all posted double-digit daily gains as the entire crypto market turned green. The memecoin sector now boasts a total market cap over $68 billion, and the move drew in tokens across the size spectrum.
On-chain data shows 4.54 trillion PEPE tokens left centralised exchanges in a single day, the largest outflow since November 2024, with top 100 addresses growing their holdings by over 6% in the past 30 days, reducing immediate sell-side pressure. That supply shift may have amplified the price response once buying picked up.
Observers note that a broader altcoin rally or a positive development on the pending spot ETF could act as a further catalyst. Canary Capital filed an S-1 with the SEC in April 2026 for the first spot ETF holding PEPE directly, with the proposal including a small ETH allocation for network fees and PEPE held by a custodian.
Memecoin prices have historically fluctuated more than other types of cryptocurrencies, and the sector remains driven largely by market sentiment rather than fundamental value. Traders should be aware that moves of this magnitude can reverse as quickly as they appear.
