Pepecoin leads today's memecoin surge
Pepecoin ($PEPE), one of crypto's original memecoins, has surged over 60% in 24 hours and nearly 200% over the past 30 days, leading the latest memecoin rally on Ethereum.
An OG Memecoin Back in the Spotlight
Pepecoin (@Pepecoins) is trending again, posting one of the crypto market's sharpest short-term gains. The token has surged over 60% in the past 24 hours and is up nearly 200% over the last 30 days, leading what has become a broader memecoin rally.
The project has deep roots in internet culture. PepeCoin is a deflationary meme token inspired by the Pepe the Frog meme and one of the earliest memecoins, initially launched as a Proof-of-Work blockchain before migrating to Ethereum in 2023 as an ERC-20 token. That move gave the project access to Ethereum's security infrastructure and broader DeFi ecosystem, helping it reach a new generation of traders.
The Pepe the Frog character itself has a long history online. The token is based on the Pepe the Frog character, originally created by Matt Furie in 2005, which became a popular internet meme recognised across countless online communities.
Meme Culture Meets Market Momentum
Unlike traditional cryptocurrencies that focus on technology or utility, PEPE exists purely as a cultural phenomenon driven by community enthusiasm and internet humor. That formula has proven resilient. Its cultural capital resonates well with retail traders, who comprise the majority of the memecoin market, and should a memecoin cycle gain momentum, PEPE is widely considered one of the first assets likely to see a price surge.
Meme coins have a reputation for offering significant returns, as their values can surge dramatically when supported by strong community movements. Pepecoin's current run appears to fit that pattern, with social media activity and speculative demand combining to push the token sharply higher in a short window.
As with all memecoins, the gains carry risk. Price moves of this magnitude can reverse quickly, and the token carries no underlying utility or formal development roadmap. Investors should treat assets in this category with appropriate caution.
