@spaceandtime announced on Tuesday, 8 September, that it has integrated @chainlink's Confidential HTTP into its Virtual Vaults product. The move, amplified by Chainlink's own account, is designed to let institutional borrowers prove collateral positions to lenders without handing over raw API credentials to any counterparty.

How the credential flow works

When Virtual Vaults runs a balance check, the API call is routed into a sealed Trusted Execution Environment (TEE). Inside that enclave, the credentials are used to fetch the relevant account data and then discarded before the result leaves the environment. Node operators, the lender, and Space and Time itself are kept outside that process. The verified result is then settled onchain via a zero-knowledge proof, giving lenders cryptographic assurance of a borrower's position.

It is worth noting that Chainlink's Confidential Compute capability, which underpins Confidential HTTP, is still in the early stages of rollout. According to Chainlink's November 2025 blog post, Early Access was planned through its Chainlink Runtime Environment (CRE) in early 2026, with General Access to follow later in the year. Chainlink's own materials also caution that TEE-based systems require extra safeguards against hardware-level vulnerabilities, a consideration worth keeping in mind when assessing the strength of the trust model.

Chainlink's broader privacy standard brings together Confidential Compute, Blockchain Privacy Manager, and CCIP Private Transactions to help institutions connect existing systems to blockchain infrastructure without exposing proprietary data onchain.

The problem Virtual Vaults is built to solve

Institutional borrowers in digital asset markets routinely hold collateral across multiple exchanges and DeFi protocols at the same time. Space and Time argues that traditional verification methods, such as periodic auditor reports or point-in-time attestations, leave lenders working from data that is already stale by the time it arrives. Virtual Vaults, the company says, replace those snapshots with continuously updated, cryptographically verified collateral data covering both centralised and decentralised venues.

The core tension the Chainlink integration addresses is straightforward: lenders need real-time visibility into collateral, but borrowers cannot safely share raw API keys with a counterparty. Space and Time describes Virtual Vaults as providing real-time verification for lenders while borrowers retain full custody, with the sealed enclave acting as the neutral verification layer that publishes only the proof.
