StoneX Digital onboarded to institutional crypto venue EDX Markets
StoneX Digital, a subsidiary of Nasdaq-listed StoneX Group, has joined EDX Markets to route client trades through the institutional-only crypto venue and its central clearinghouse, the latest sign of traditional finance deepening its push into digital assets.
StoneX Routes Client Trades Through EDX Infrastructure
EDX Markets, an institutional-only trading venue with a central clearinghouse, has announced a strategic partnership with StoneX Digital, a wholly-owned subsidiary of StoneX Group Inc. (@StoneX_Official), to enhance institutional access to digital asset markets through EDX's trading infrastructure. Neither firm disclosed the volume of trades expected to flow through the arrangement.
Through the partnership, StoneX Digital will leverage EDX's trading venue and central clearinghouse model to deliver enhanced market structure, operational efficiencies, and access to robust liquidity for its clients. The clearinghouse structure is central to EDX's pitch to traditional finance: EDX operates an institution-only crypto marketplace that separates trading from custody and settlement through a central clearinghouse, a model designed to reduce counterparty risk and mirror the structure used in traditional financial markets.
StoneX Digital, launched in June 2022, provides institutional clients with access to digital assets through ETFs, futures, and native tokens. It provides digital asset custody through StoneX Digital International Limited, a registered Crypto Asset Service Provider regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland under the MiCA regulatory framework.
EDX Builds Out Its Regulatory and Capital Foundations
EDX launched in 2023 with backing from Citadel Securities, Fidelity Digital Assets, Charles Schwab, Paradigm, and Sequoia Capital. Since then, the firm has moved aggressively to deepen its institutional credentials. EDX closed a $76 million Series C funding round led by Japanese financial services group SBI Holdings, with fresh capital directed toward strengthening trading, clearing, and settlement functions, speeding up product development, and growing the firm's operations internationally.
On the regulatory front, EDX Markets has applied to the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency for a national trust bank charter. If approved, the charter would let EDX offer custody, asset management, and principal trading through a regulated trust entity that is structurally separated from its core trading platform. The move comes as competition intensifies among crypto firms seeking trust bank charters to provide regulated custody and settlement services that mirror traditional market safeguards and attract large financial institutions.
The StoneX tie-up is consistent with a broader pattern. Earlier this year, EDX Markets integrated with LeveL Markets, a US registered broker-dealer and operator of the LeveL ATS, combining LeveL's low-latency execution and order routing with EDX's trading venue. The additions point to an exchange steadily expanding the roster of regulated counterparties plugged into its infrastructure.
