BlackRock Puts a Number on Bitcoin

BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, has issued formal guidance recommending that investors allocate between 1% and 2% of a multi-asset portfolio to $BTC. The BlackRock Investment Institute set out its position in a research note titled "Sizing Bitcoin in Portfolios," communicated directly to financial advisors.

The firm believes a 1-2% allocation to Bitcoin is a reasonable range for a multi-asset portfolio, provided investors expect broader adoption and can tolerate the risk of rapid price swings. The note frames Bitcoin as a complementary diversifier rather than a core portfolio holding.

One of the central arguments is Bitcoin's relatively low correlation with equities and bonds. Bitcoin is less correlated with major risk assets in the long term, with a very low correlation between Bitcoin and equity returns, according to the paper's authors. That independence from traditional markets is presented as a key reason to include a modest position, even for conservative, multi-asset strategies.

Why the 2% Cap Matters

BlackRock's framework is precise about the upper limit. A 1% to 2% allocation to Bitcoin lifts the digital currency's share of portfolio risk to between 2% and 5%, broadly in line with the average Magnificent Seven tech stock, which contributes approximately 4% of portfolio risk based on current index weights.

Allocations beyond 2% trigger exponential risk increases. A 4% Bitcoin position could account for approximately 14% of total portfolio risk, effectively becoming the dominant risk factor. The guidance is therefore as much about setting a ceiling as it is about making a case for inclusion.

BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) currently manages approximately $62 billion in assets and accounts for nearly half of all US spot Bitcoin ETF assets, making it the dominant vehicle for institutional Bitcoin exposure. That scale gives the recommendation considerable weight in the broader advisory community.

The firm added that Bitcoin's role as an investment asset is evolving and that it can be used as a complementary diversification tool within long-term strategies.
