How Do Injective’s Weekly INJ Burn Auctions Actually Work?

How Injective's weekly INJ burn auction works, from fee collection to bidding and burning, plus how the Community BuyBack fits in.

Injective's weekly burn auction takes a share of the fees its apps earn, packages them into a basket, and auctions that basket off to the highest bidder in INJ.
The INJ used to win is destroyed forever. This has run every week since December 2021 and remains one of the examples of tokenomics tied directly to network use.
What Is the Injective Burn Auction?
The burn auction is an onchain, first-price style bidding event built into Injective's exchange and auction modules. It launched in December 2021, and its first round burned 40,000 INJ. The idea is as follows: as more people trade and build on Injective, more fees get collected, and more INJ gets burned. Nothing is burned unless there is real activity to fund it.
How Does the Weekly Bidding Process Work?
Each round follows the same basic path, and the entire process is visible onchain, so anyone can check it themselves.
Steps In Each Round
- Fee Collection: Typically 60% of revenue from participating apps, plus any direct contributions from users, is gathered into the Auction Fund.
- Basket Formation: These fees, often a mix of assets like ETH, USDT, or other tokens on Injective, form a basket for that week's round.
- Bidding: Anyone can bid on the basket, but only with INJ. Bids are placed openly, and each new bid must beat the last.
- Winning: When the round closes, the highest bidder receives the whole basket in exchange for their INJ bid.
- Burning: The winning INJ is sent to a burn address and removed from supply permanently.
Because the winner can sometimes get the basket for less than its market value, bidding can create an arbitrage opportunity, which is part of what keeps participation active.
How Has the Burn Mechanism Evolved?
The auction has been upgraded several times as Injective's ecosystem grew.
- INJ 2.0 (2023): Opened the Auction Fund to any dApp, not just those using the exchange module.
- April 2024 Upgrade: Let individual users contribute assets directly into the basket, not just apps.
- INJ 3.0 (IIP-392): Adjusted Injective's dynamic supply model, raising the Supply Rate Change parameter from 10% to 50% and scheduling quarterly reductions to inflation bounds over a two-year period, timed to Bitcoin's halving cycle. Injective's community says these changes increase INJ's deflation rate by 400%.
What Is the INJ Supply Squeeze?
In November 2025, governance proposal IIP-617 passed with 99.96% approval, introducing the Community BuyBack. This runs monthly, separate from the weekly auction: users commit INJ, receive a pro-rata share of ecosystem revenue, and their committed INJ is burned. The Supply Squeeze framework ties this monthly burn to the weekly auction, so both mechanisms scale together with network revenue.
As of mid-2026, cumulative burns across both programs had reached roughly 7.19 million INJ, with the August 2026 buyback round alone targeting more than 33,000 INJ. Crypto analyst @nazarr_0x noted on August 16, 2026, that Community BuyBack participants had earned average returns above 20%, calling it one of the more overlooked opportunities tied to INJ's tokenomics.
As of August 26, 2026, INJ traded near $5.52, with circulating supply close to its 100 million total supply cap, according to Coingecko data.
Why Does the Burn Auction Matter for INJ Holders?
- It links token scarcity directly to how much the network is actually used, not to a fixed schedule.
- Every round is transparent and verifiable onchain.
- It gives active users a repeatable way to participate in supply reduction.
Conclusion
Injective's weekly burn auction converts a share of ecosystem revenue into a bidding event, then destroys the winning INJ bid. Since 2021, upgrades through INJ 2.0, INJ 3.0, and the 2025 Supply Squeeze have widened who can contribute and tightened supply issuance, pushing cumulative burns past 7 million INJ.

The mechanism now works alongside the monthly Community BuyBack, giving Injective two connected, usage-driven ways to reduce INJ's circulating supply.
