Why is Aster Gaining Ground in Perpetual Trading, and How Does It Work?

Perpetual DEXs like Aster let traders bet on crypto prices with leverage and no expiry date. Here's how they work and why volume has surged past spot trading.

Perpetual decentralized exchanges, or perp DEXs, let traders open leveraged long or short positions on crypto prices without ever owning the underlying asset, and they now process more trading volume than spot DEXs because leverage and two-way price exposure attract far more repeat activity than simple token swaps.
Platforms such as Aster, Hyperliquid, Lighter, and edgeX have turned this corner of DeFi into one of the fastest-growing markets on-chain. Perp DEX volume hit $6.7 trillion in 2025, an increase of 346% from the year before. Growth has continued into 2026. According to CoinGecko's latest report, perp DEX volume rose 8-fold in two years, from $81.74 billion to $739.48 billion, pushing decentralized exchanges' share of total perpetuals trading from 2.0% to 10.2%.
What Is a Perpetual DEX?
A perpetual DEX is a smart contract platform where users trade futures-style contracts that never expire. Traders deposit collateral, such as USDC, USDT, or ETH, and the contract creates a synthetic position tied to the asset's price, while a funding rate keeps the contract price aligned with the spot market. This differs from traditional futures, which settle on a fixed date.
Because perpetual contracts have no expiration, a trader can hold a position indefinitely, with funding payments exchanged periodically between long and short traders to keep the contract price close to spot.
Execution designs vary across the sector:
- AMM-based models, used by platforms like GMX, price trades against liquidity pools.
- On-chain order books, used by Hyperliquid and dYdX v4, match buyers and sellers directly.
- Hybrid engines, used by Aster, combine off-chain order matching with on-chain settlement.
How Does Aster's Trading Engine Work?
Aster began in late 2024 after Astherus and APX Finance merged, then rebranded as a dedicated perpetual futures platform in March 2025. It offers two trading modes: a simple mode aimed at casual users and a "Pro Mode" order book for active traders, alongside features like hidden orders and stock-linked perpetuals. Its hybrid liquidity engine combines deep liquidity, off-chain matching, and on-chain settlement for efficiency.
Infrastructure has advanced through 2026. On March 17, Aster launched Aster Chain Mainnet, its own Layer 1 blockchain built specifically for trading privacy. The network embeds zero-knowledge-verifiable encryption and stealth addresses into the execution layer, targeting over 100,000 transactions per second with 50-millisecond median block times.
More recently, in early August 2026, Aster activated AOS-2, its second open listing standard, which lets developers propose new perpetual markets. Applicants must stake 1 million ASTER tokens, locked for four years, before an on-chain validator vote approves a listing.
The token's generation event took place on September 17, 2025, opening near $0.08 before reaching an all-time high of $2.42 on September 24, 2025. As of mid-August 2026, ASTER trades near $0.60, with a circulating supply of roughly 2.7 billion tokens against a maximum supply of 8 billion.
Why Have Perpetual DEXs Overtaken Spot Trading?
Spot DEXs let users buy and hold tokens. Perp DEXs let users profit from price moves in either direction using leverage, which naturally generates more turnover per dollar of capital deployed. A few structural shifts explain the sector's rise.

Self-Custody Without Losing Speed
By 2026, sub-second finality and CEX-grade interfaces closed the user-experience gap that had kept serious traders on centralized exchanges, while self-custody of collateral, transparent risk parameters, and permissionless market access remained advantages unique to on-chain venues.
Volume Has Rotated Toward Derivatives
Hyperliquid remains the largest perp DEX, having cleared more than $432 billion in perpetual futures volume during March 2026 alone. Competition has been intense at times. During a surge earlier in 2026, Aster overtook Hyperliquid in daily trading volume, contributing to $1.8 trillion in sector-wide volume across that quarter.
The Sector Remains Volatile
Growth hasn't been a straight line. Perp DEX volumes fell more than 50% from an October 2025 peak into early 2026, with daily activity in April dropping to levels last seen the previous July. Newer entrants such as Pacifica, Extended, and Variational have since gained market share, each running points programs that suggest airdrops may follow.
What Risks Come With Perpetual Trading?
Leverage cuts both ways. Before trading, users should understand:
- Margin requirements and liquidation price
- Funding rates and how they shift with market sentiment
- Collateral type and slippage on entry and exit
- Maximum position size relative to available liquidity
A position that looks profitable at entry can turn costly if funding turns negative or liquidity thins during volatility.
Conclusion
Perpetual DEXs have moved from a niche corner of DeFi to a market processing trillions of dollars a year, built on non-custodial collateral, funding-rate mechanics, and execution models ranging from AMMs to hybrid order books. Aster illustrates this shift directly: a merged platform that scaled through dual trading modes, its own privacy-focused Layer 1 blockchain, and an expanding permissionless listing system, all while competing with Hyperliquid and a growing field of newer entrants for daily trading volume.
