Coinbase Launches Regulated Crypto Derivatives Trading In Canada
Coinbase has become the first major crypto exchange to offer regulated futures trading to eligible Canadian investors, launching 23 contracts with up to 10x leverage through its CFTC-regulated subsidiary.
A First for Canadian Crypto Markets
@Coinbase has officially expanded its product suite in Canada, becoming the first major crypto exchange to offer regulated crypto derivatives to eligible investors in the country. As of September 2, the exchange's subsidiary Coinbase Financial Markets (CFM) is offering regulated crypto futures trading to eligible Canadian clients, making it the first major crypto exchange to bring native crypto futures to the country.
The rollout includes 23 perpetual and dated futures contracts spanning $BTC, $ETH, and other digital assets, with leverage up to 10x. Introductory fees start as low as 0.02% per trade plus $0.11 per contract, a pricing structure clearly designed to lure sophisticated traders who have been routing orders through offshore platforms.
CFM is operating under a Canadian international exemption facilitated by the country's securities regulators. The initial derivatives product will not be available to every retail customer. It will be offered to "permitted clients," with the launch described as the "first iteration" of a broader effort to bring Coinbase products to Canadian customers.
Part of a Broader "Everything Exchange" Strategy
Coinbase has been building toward this moment for a while, having registered as a restricted dealer in Canada back in April 2024, giving it a foothold for spot trading. The derivatives launch represents the next phase of what the company calls its "everything exchange" strategy: a single platform where users can trade spot crypto, futures, and eventually other financial instruments without hopping between apps.
Regulated platforms provide standardized contract terms, transparent pricing, and recourse mechanisms that offshore venues simply do not. For Canadian traders who previously had few compliant options for leveraged crypto exposure, the launch marks a meaningful shift in the domestic market landscape.
The company has its sights set on securing CIRO dealer status by early 2027, which would give it a more permanent regulatory footing and potentially unlock broader retail access. Coinbase Canada CEO Eric Richmond has said the exchange wants to offer Canadians the same advanced crypto products available in the US, and argues that Canada must move beyond case-by-case exemptions toward a bespoke, harmonized national framework for digital assets.
