Crypto VC is narrowing to a smaller circle of firms

Fewer Players, Bigger Cheques

The pool of active crypto venture investors has shrunk dramatically. CryptoRank data puts unique investors in crypto funding rounds at roughly 152 so far in July 2026, down from 244 in June and 452 last October. The peak, reached in May 2022, stood at 1,177. A separate quarterly reading from CryptoRank placed unique active investors at just 651 in Q2 2026, the lowest quarterly figure in six years.

Capital has not thinned at the same pace. July was tracking roughly $1.48 billion across about 37 rounds, compared with $1.44 billion across all of June. The pattern is clear: fewer firms writing bigger cheques. Total fundraising fell to $1.4 billion in June, down 63% from $3.8 billion in April, with April itself representing the weakest monthly result in two years.

The broader trend reflects a structural reallocation away from early-stage bets toward high-conviction mega-rounds, with Series C+ capital surging sharply year-over-year in Q1 2026 while pre-seed activity eased back. Research by Galaxy Digital confirms that funds are now being directed to proven projects, with the majority of capital going to later-stage companies.

Who Is Still Writing Cheques

@cbventures led the ranks of crypto-focused VCs by deal count in H1 2026 with 30 investments. @animocabrands finished second with 19 deals, @a16z logged 18, and @tether completed 15, according to CryptoRank.

Over the trailing 12 months, @cbventures completed a peer-best 75 deals, followed by @animocabrands with 40, YZi Labs with 39, GSR with 31 and @a16z with 30.

The ranking points to a market increasingly dominated by firms with strategic reasons to stay active through cycles. Exchanges, stablecoin issuers and large ecosystem investors are positioning for influence over the next layer of crypto infrastructure rather than simply chasing short-term returns.

By sector, DeFi protocols led with 216 fundraising rounds over the past year, while payments startups logged 131 rounds and AI-crypto companies raised 128, according to CryptoRank.
