Vitalik Says Ethereum Could Borrow Bitcoin's Scaling Playbook
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin praised Bitcoin developers for pioneering Utreexo and said Ethereum's scaling strategy is moving toward a hybrid UTXO model that could scale activity without sacrificing decentralization.
Buterin Credits Bitcoin's UTXO Innovations
Ethereum $ETH co-founder Vitalik Buterin (@VitalikButerin) has publicly credited Bitcoin $BTC developers for pioneering state-management ideas that are now shaping Ethereum's long-term scaling strategy. In an August 16 post, Buterin specifically highlighted the Utreexo project as a key reference point, calling it a meaningful contribution to blockchain scalability research.
Utreexo is a Bitcoin scaling tool developed at the MIT Digital Currency Initiative. Rather than requiring every node to store the full set of unspent transaction outputs, it uses a compact Merkle-tree accumulator alongside cryptographic inclusion proofs, dramatically reducing the local storage burden on nodes while still allowing full transaction validation.
Ethereum Eyes a Hybrid State Model
Buterin said Ethereum's current proposed scaling direction mirrors similar thinking. The goal, he explained, is to combine UTXO-style state structures with Ethereum's existing dynamic account model rather than replace one with the other. According to Blockonomi, native UTXOs could cut permanent payment-state usage by 99.8 percent, reducing one billion entries to roughly 300 MB.
The urgency behind this research is real. Ethereum's state currently grows at around 100 GB per year, making efficient state management one of the core constraints on any path to meaningful L1 scale. Under Buterin's proposed tiered model, assets like NFTs and token balances would migrate to UTXOs or temporary storage, while core infrastructure such as smart contract code and DeFi contracts would remain in permanent storage for composability.
Ethereum researchers are also examining how native UTXOs could work alongside Buterin's proposed recursive-STARK mempool, where nodes periodically combine transaction-validity proofs into recursive STARKs, adding another layer of scalability without compromising security.
Buterin emphasized that the broader objective is not just raw throughput. Easier node operation, continued censorship resistance, and maintaining decentralization remain central requirements. The vision is for Ethereum to capture the efficiency benefits of UTXO-style state while preserving the programmability that defines the network.
