Another large Ethereum holder has thrown in the towel. On-chain data tracked by @Lookonchain shows a whale deposited 3,128 $ETH to Coinbase in a single transaction, liquidating the entire position after suffering a 40% loss on the holding.

The wallet had originally accumulated the tokens roughly six months ago at a cost of approximately $5.95 million. By the time the position was closed, the market value had fallen to around $2.08 million, leaving the holder with a realised loss of more than $3.87 million.

A Familiar Story for ETH Holders in 2026

The exit is part of a broader wave of capitulation among Ethereum investors this year. Ethereum has fallen more than 30% in 2026, pushing the asset below the average entry points of major institutional holders, including whales and ETF investors. For many buyers who entered during stronger market conditions, the drawdown has made holding increasingly difficult to justify.

Ethereum whale wallets holding over 1,000 ETH have been distributing their holdings since the end of 2025, with some buyers now underwater as ETH dipped under $2,000. The move to Coinbase in a single block is consistent with a straightforward liquidation rather than a staged exit, suggesting the seller prioritised speed over price optimisation.

What Large ETH Inflows to Exchanges Signal

When large wallets move tokens to centralised exchanges in bulk, analysts typically treat it as a signal of incoming sell pressure. Elevated inflows to exchanges typically indicate growing selling activity as traders move assets onto exchanges. In this case, the single-transaction deposit removes any ambiguity about intent.

Lookonchain is an on-chain analyst account run by a small team that curates high-signal flows in real time, surfacing specific events such as whale deposits and large token movements. The combination of specificity and curation is the value: most whale flows do not matter, but Lookonchain filters for the ones that do.

Not every large holder is heading for the exit, however. Between May 1 and May 29, Santiment data tracking Ethereum supply held by non-exchange whale wallets rose from 124.15 million ETH to 125.17 million ETH, a net gain of just over one million ETH worth more than $2 billion at current prices, even as ETH dropped roughly 12% over the same window. The market remains split between those cutting losses and those using the dip to accumulate.
