Hyperliquid (@HyperliquidX) has activated AQAv2, a framework that adds USDC reserve yield as a second, independent revenue stream to its native buyback and burn mechanism. The upgrade marks a significant expansion of the protocol's deflationary engine, which has already retired a substantial portion of the token's supply.

How AQAv2 Works

Under AQAv2, roughly 90% of the reserve yield generated by USDC deposits on Hyperliquid flows back to the protocol and into the Assistance Fund. That fund uses the proceeds to purchase $HYPE from the open market and burn it permanently.

Yield began accruing on August 26, with the first payment to the Assistance Fund scheduled for October 3. After that, payments follow a fixed 30-day cadence, arriving automatically eight days after each interval closes. The buyback program is funded entirely by stablecoin reserve yield, not by issuing new tokens, and the rate scales directly with the amount of USDC held on the platform.

The arrangement stems from a deal struck in May 2026. Circle and Coinbase joined as USDC's technology and treasury deployment partners, each staking 500,000 HYPE and providing a six-month exit notice period to ensure commitment. As part of that agreement, Hyperliquid's native stablecoin USDH was phased out in favour of USDC.

Scale of the Opportunity

USDC deposits on Hyperliquid currently total roughly $6.74 billion. Under a base-case 3% treasury yield assumption, AQAv2 could add approximately $498,575 in daily revenue for additional $HYPE buybacks, equivalent to around $182 million annually. That would represent an estimated 18% increase in Hyperliquid's daily protocol revenue on top of existing trading fee buybacks.

Critically, this revenue stream operates regardless of trading conditions. The amount of yield captured scales directly with USDC held on Hyperliquid, meaning the buyback rate grows as the platform's stablecoin TVL grows.

The Assistance Fund's existing track record is already notable. Since November 2024, 99% of fees have funded buybacks, retiring 462 million HYPE worth $1.27 billion. AQAv2 now adds a parallel engine, one that is independent of trading volume and anchored to the yield on billions of dollars in on-platform stablecoin reserves.
