Pi Network hikes Pi App Studio fees
Pi Network has raised Pi App Studio developer fees to 30.30 $PI for app creation and 2.5 $PI for edits, ending a heavily subsidised pricing model to push out low-quality and AI-generated apps.
Pi Network (@PiCoreTeam) has significantly raised the cost of building applications on its Pi App Studio platform, introducing a fee of 30.30 $PI for app creation and 2.5 $PI for each edit. The move marks a sharp departure from the previous heavily subsidised model.
From Subsidised to Market-Rate Pricing
Until now, Pi has heavily subsidised the cost of creating and editing apps in App Studio for all creators. Under that model, creators paid just 0.25 $PI to create an app and 0.25 $PI to make an edit, even though the actual cost of providing AI-powered app creation was significantly higher. To allow for lower pricing during its initial rollout, Pi has been covering the difference.
From August 24, standard pricing more closely reflects the underlying AI resources required, with prices varying depending on an application's complexity and no additional markup from Pi Network. Pi Network says universal subsidies had encouraged experimentation and helped it understand App Studio usage, but continuing to fund applications that never develop an audience could waste resources.
Quality Over Quantity
The biggest change is that subsidy eligibility will no longer apply equally to every creator. Pi Network plans to use data showing whether applications attract users beyond their own developers, with criteria reviewed regularly so creators paying standard rates can later qualify if their products gain genuine traction.
This creates a direct incentive to improve usability, attract users, gather feedback, and build applications solving real problems rather than producing experimental or spam applications. For developers, the practical effect is clear: deploying an app is no longer enough. Those who cannot demonstrate real user engagement will shoulder the full cost of development and ongoing maintenance.
Pi App Studio is a generative AI-powered coding tool designed for creators, whether technical or non-technical, to easily build and launch Pi apps. The fee restructuring is part of a broader effort by @PiCoreTeam to raise the standard of applications within the Pi ecosystem and reduce the proliferation of low-quality or AI-generated submissions.
