Ripple Locks 700M XRP Back Into Escrow
Ripple has returned 700 million XRP, worth roughly $950 million, to escrow after its September monthly release, leaving a net 300 million XRP outside the new contracts.
Ripple has returned 700 million $XRP to escrow following its latest scheduled monthly release, according to blockchain tracker Whale Alert. The two re-lock transactions covered 500 million and 200 million XRP respectively, with the combined transfers valued at roughly $950 million.
How the Monthly Cycle Works
The move follows Ripple's standard pattern. On September 1, Ripple released 1 billion XRP from escrow through three transactions of 100 million, 400 million, and 500 million XRP. After the release, the company returned the majority of those tokens to new time-locked contracts, leaving a net 300 million XRP outside the newly created escrows.
The escrow system itself dates back nearly a decade. The program was established in December 2017, when Ripple deposited 55 billion XRP into a series of time-locked smart contracts, a mechanism designed to prevent the company from flooding the market and suppressing the price. The protocol automatically releases up to 1 billion XRP on the first day of each month, making the tokens available to Ripple-controlled accounts without any additional action from the company.
Historically, Ripple re-locks between 600 million and 800 million XRP back into escrow within days of the release, meaning the net amount actually entering potential circulation each month lands somewhere between 200 million and 300 million XRP. September's re-lock of 700 million sits squarely within that range.
What Stays Outside Escrow
The remaining tokens that are not returned to escrow typically go toward operational use, liquidity services, and ecosystem development. An escrow unlock makes XRP available to Ripple but does not confirm any market sale.
As of September 1, 2026, approximately 31.28 billion XRP remained locked in escrow, representing about 31% of the total supply. The re-lock mechanics also explain why the escrow has lasted far beyond its original 55-month design. Every returned token extends the queue, so the schedule keeps rolling forward, turning what was a 55-month runway into a self-extending system still running nearly a decade later.
