XRP And HYPE Face Big Short Bets From Wintermute
Crypto market maker Wintermute has expanded its short positions on Hyperliquid to $190.8 million, spanning XRP, HYPE, ETH, BTC, and SOL, as on-chain data from Onchain Lens reveals a broad bearish stance across major tokens.
Crypto market maker Wintermute has ramped up its short exposure on the Hyperliquid derivatives platform to around $190.8 million, according to on-chain data from Onchain Lens. The move marks a notable increase from a prior position of $146.19 million and spans five of the largest tokens in the market.
A Broad Bet Across Major Tokens
Wintermute's largest short position is in Ethereum ($ETH) at $53 million, followed by Bitcoin ($BTC) at $30.7 million. The firm also holds short positions in Solana ($SOL) at $22.6 million, Hyperliquid's native token $HYPE at $11.4 million, and $XRP at $10.2 million.
The $XRP short stands out given the token's recent price strength. XRP has gained nearly 47% over the past seven days, meaning Wintermute's bearish position is swimming against a strong tide. The firm's overall book currently carries around $5.85 million in unrealized losses as a result.
Hedging or a Directional Call?
It is worth noting that market makers frequently take offsetting positions across venues, and a short on Hyperliquid does not necessarily reflect a directional bet. It could be part of a broader arbitrage or hedging strategy. Wintermute has previously described its approach as rules-based and delta neutral, a hedging strategy that requires taking multiple positions to maintain no directional exposure to price movements.
Wintermute's trading activity is closely watched because of its role as a liquidity provider on major exchanges and its influence on market sentiment. Nonetheless, the timing and size of the increase have sparked discussions about near-term price pressure in the crypto market.
The positions also highlight the growing importance of Hyperliquid as a venue for large-scale derivatives trading, as it continues to attract significant order flow from professional firms. While short positions can indicate negative sentiment, they also create the potential for short squeezes if prices rise unexpectedly.
