XRP Ledger becomes a settlement option in Stripe and Tempo's Machine Payments Protocol
The XRP Ledger is now a supported settlement rail in Stripe and Tempo's Machine Payments Protocol, letting AI agents stream and settle XRP payments natively via Ripple's XRPL AI Starter Kit.
The XRP Ledger has been added as a settlement option in the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP), the open standard for AI agent payments co-developed by @stripe and @tempo. The integration is powered by @Ripple's XRPL AI Starter Kit and expands the set of payment rails available to autonomous software agents operating within the protocol.
How the XRPL Integration Works
Under the integration, AI agents can stream ripple:native over XRPL's native payment channels and settle the full session balance in a single on-chain transaction. Ripple's open-source xrpl-mpp-sdk handles the MPP handshake, credential and receipt envelopes, and the cumulative-voucher session model. Settlement uses XRPL's native PayChannel primitive: a PaymentChannelClaim carrying the close flag settles the cumulative amount to the destination, removes the channel entry, and returns any unspent deposit to the sender, all in one step.
The approach maps closely to MPP's session intent, which describes settlement as a symmetric operation where either party can close the channel and resolve the final balance on-chain.
MPP Background and Broader Ecosystem Support
According to Tempo's documentation, the Machine Payments Protocol is an open standard for machine-to-machine payments that lets agents, applications, and people pay for services inline with an HTTP request, without requiring advance setup of API keys or billing accounts. The protocol is payment-method agnostic and supports stablecoins, cards, and other payment rails. @stripe and @tempo launched it alongside Tempo's mainnet in March 2026.
@XRPLF has also confirmed that XRPL is now supported in the Open Wallet Standard (@OpenWallet), an open-source specification that defines how AI agents store, sign, and manage keys across multiple blockchains. The standard currently covers a broad range of chains including EVM networks, Solana, Bitcoin, and XRPL, with private keys stored encrypted locally and never exposed to the agent process.
Together, the MPP and Open Wallet Standard integrations position XRPL as part of a growing stack of infrastructure aimed at enabling autonomous AI agents to transact across the internet without human intermediaries.
