Backpack just took Stock/ETFs to a whole new level
Backpack Exchange has migrated to a fully unified portfolio margining system, making all stock and ETF perpetual listings eligible as collateral for on-chain derivatives. Here is what traders need to know.
Unified Portfolio Margin Arrives for Stock and ETF Perpetuals
@Backpack has completed a significant upgrade to its trading infrastructure, migrating to a fully unified portfolio margining system. Under the new setup, all stock and ETF perpetual listings on the platform automatically become eligible as collateral for spot and derivatives positions, removing the need to hold separate balances across different product types.
Backpack's edge comes from the combination: a licensed brokerage holding real shares, a 24/7 derivatives venue on Solana, and a unified margin account that treats brokerage and exchange positions as a single collateral pool. That structure means traders can leverage, short, or hedge equity exposure directly from one wallet, with tokenized equities serving as core margin for on-chain derivative products.
Users who hold real shares through Backpack Securities, the exchange's regulated brokerage arm, can now deploy those holdings as margin for perpetual futures positions, as collateral to borrow USD, or to trade spot on margin.
Broker-Like Services, On-Chain
Backpack Securities combines brokerage infrastructure with tokenization infrastructure, enabling investors to seamlessly transition between traditional securities ownership and tokenized securities. The result is a trading environment that gives participants the ability to hold long-term equity exposure while running advanced hedging strategies from within the same account.
Unlike other exchanges that force traders to segregate balances across separate wallets for spot, futures, margin, and earn products, Backpack offers a single cross-margin wallet that can be used to trade all products. Backpack allows users to deploy 100% of lent assets as collateral, enabling them to earn yield even while those assets are being used to maintain positions.
This latest development extends the milestone Backpack reached in July 2026, when it opened the first 24/7 market for real US equities for international investors, allowing them to buy, hold, and sell actual US securities around the clock. The portfolio margining upgrade layers a full derivatives and collateral bridge on top of that foundation, pushing the platform further toward the kind of integrated, broker-like service model rarely seen in the on-chain space.
