Crypto Money Trail Brings DOJ Closer to Cartel Laundering Network
A Mexican national linked to the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación has pleaded guilty to laundering $4 million in drug proceeds through cryptocurrency, facing up to 20 years in prison.
The U.S. Department of Justice has secured another guilty plea in its crackdown on cartels using cryptocurrency to move drug money across the border. Carlos Érick Vázquez González, a 48-year-old Mexican national, admitted his role in laundering approximately $4 million in drug trafficking proceeds, in a case that illustrates how criminal networks are increasingly relying on digital assets to obscure financial flows.
How the Scheme Worked
According to court documents, Vázquez González worked with "money brokers" who arranged for the collection of drug profits in cities throughout the United States, which he then laundered and returned through cryptocurrency to Mexico. He accepted the deposit of approximately $4 million of narcotic proceeds into a cryptocurrency wallet that he controlled, then quickly moved the money to conceal its origins, before selling the cryptocurrency for U.S. dollars in Mexico and returning the bulk cash to the money broker who arranged the pick-up in the United States.
Vázquez González accepted a $40,000 commission for his participation in the scheme. He had been extradited from Mexico in October prior to entering his guilty plea. Vázquez González worked with the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación, one of Mexico's most powerful and violent criminal organisations, adding significant weight to the prosecution.
Part of a Broader Enforcement Push
The DOJ noted that this prosecution was part of the Homeland Security Task Force initiative established by President Trump's "Protecting the American People Against Invasion" Executive Order, dedicated to eliminating criminal cartels, foreign gangs, transnational criminal organisations, and human smuggling and trafficking rings.
The DEA investigated the case with support from multiple U.S. offices, Mexican DEA teams, and the IRS Criminal Investigation division. Vázquez González is scheduled to be sentenced on December 17 and faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
The case is part of a growing pattern of U.S. enforcement actions targeting the intersection of cryptocurrency and cartel finance. As prosecutors sharpen their focus on digital asset trails, cases like this one signal that crypto's pseudonymous nature offers diminishing cover for illicit actors.
