IBM claims a verified quantum milestone, and Bitcoin's math still holds

IBM and the University of Chicago have demonstrated 'trusted quantum advantage' using 70 logical qubits, but Bitcoin's elliptic curve cryptography remains safe for now. Here is what the milestone means for crypto security.

A quantum milestone with a credibility first

@IBM and the University of Chicago (@UChicago) announced on July 30 what they are calling "trusted quantum advantage," a term that carries more weight than previous claims in the field. The demonstration achieves the fundamental criteria for quantum advantage: performing computations beyond the reach of leading classical simulation methods while providing trust that the computation returned accurate results.

Scientists used a new error correction method to encode 70 logical qubits and tackle a classically intractable problem, completing the computation in approximately 15 minutes. The key differentiator is verifiability. The researchers showed these two goals could be simultaneously achieved through a novel construction of encoded quantum circuits, enabling one of the largest demonstrations of logical quantum computing to date.

Earlier quantum advantage claims were routinely challenged because the results could not be independently checked. This time, IBM ships statistical evidence alongside the result. Because the circuit was encoded, the logical computation achieved effective logical error rates that were 10 times lower than the physical error rates. "We are now firmly in the quantum advantage era," said Jay Gambetta, Director of IBM Research, adding that the milestone "establishes, with statistical confidence, a lower bound on how faithfully it was executed."

What this means for Bitcoin

For $BTC holders, the gap between IBM's current hardware and what would be needed to threaten the network remains enormous. Breaking the elliptic curve cryptography that secures Bitcoin requires on the order of 1,200 to 2,330 logical qubits, compared to the roughly 100 or so logical qubits on the best machines available in 2026. Breaking Bitcoin's elliptic curve cryptography would require an estimated 500,000 physical qubits under the most optimistic engineering assumptions, a scale at least one to two orders of magnitude beyond what exists today.

In theory, a quantum computer powerful enough to run Shor's algorithm could derive a private key from a public key, breaking the security assumptions behind Bitcoin's digital signature scheme. But that scenario remains distant. The current state is fewer than a hundred logical qubits, and none at the error rates required for cryptographic attacks.

The meaningful risk window is 2029 to 2032, based on consensus estimates from experts at Google, IBM, and the Ethereum Foundation. IBM's latest result keeps the company on track for its 2029 fault-tolerant quantum computing target, making this a meaningful marker on the road to Q-Day rather than a change in the near-term threat itself.
