Polkadot's elastic scaling lets one chain run on several cores at once
Polkadot's elastic scaling breaks the one-core-per-parachain limit, letting chains push multiple blocks per relay chain slot and purchase compute capacity through the Agile Coretime market.
Breaking the one-core bottleneck
A parachain on @Polkadot has traditionally been limited to a single core, meaning it can get only one block included per relay chain block regardless of how congested the chain becomes. Elastic scaling breaks that constraint by allowing parachains to utilise multiple computational cores simultaneously, ending the previous 1:1 relationship between parachain and relay chain blocks. In practice, a chain can push up to three blocks into the same relay chain slot by claiming additional cores. The feature, completed in October 2025, allows a parachain to temporarily use multiple cores when demand is high and release them once traffic drops.
Elastic scaling increases the throughput of a parachain, with projections suggesting individual chains could theoretically handle significantly higher transaction volumes under the multi-core model. The upgrade is part of what the Polkadot community refers to as the "scaling trilogy," alongside Asynchronous Backing and Agile Coretime.
How coretime purchasing works
Cores are acquired through Polkadot's Agile Coretime market using $DOT. Cores can be designated to a parachain either continuously through bulk coretime or dynamically via on-demand coretime. Coretime is sold on demand for immediate use, or purchased on a bulk basis ordered up to 28 days in advance. Early-stage projects can start small with on-demand purchasing, paying per block, while more established chains with predictable workloads tend to favour the bulk route for cost certainty.
Shifting to multiple cores moves the performance constraint from the relay chain to the parachain itself. Block producers must be capable of generating blocks fast enough to fill the additional cores, which raises hardware requirements on the chain's own infrastructure. Parachains can intelligently distribute workloads across cores during peak demand periods and release resources when traffic subsides, making the system well-suited to applications with variable or unpredictable usage patterns.
